TESTING TO SUPPORT SKIN MICROBIOME FRIENDLY CLAIMS

Human skin performs many important functions, which are essential for human health. The skin is also colonised by populations of microbes known as the skin microbiome or skin microbiota. The role of the microbiota in skin health is still under investigation, however it is known to play a role in many physiological functions. An imbalance in the skin microbiota known as dysbiosis is associated with diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Many cosmetic products contain ingredients with the potential to alter the skin microbiota. Here at Melbec we offer a sensible testing approach to evaluate the impact of cosmetics on the skin microbiota. We are also looking to the future of microbiome testing, specifically in the areas of transcriptomics and metabolomics to evaluate both the composition and function of the skin microbiota.
