There is a lot that we don’t see. Even when our own work involves colleagues, partners, items and information from every corner of the global cosmetics and personal care industry, we each spend much of our time focused on our own work. And it’s a rare opportunity when we get to learn about the behind-the-scenes people and the nuanced processes that are all around us in this vibrant industry.
Of course, in Italy every March, Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna is the best chance to engage with suppliers, operators, and buyers from around the world. But before the trade fair opens and after the doors close, the CosmoFactory podcast—now in its third year—is a global gathering place for our industry.
CosmoFactory launched a new series of conversations on September 01, 2026. The first episode of the series features my interview with Romina Brown, CEO and Founder of Strategic Solutions International, a US-based category growth management firm.
People, Ideas, and Connections Shape the Beauty Industry
Out of appreciation for all the talented individuals and unseen processes that go into the success of cosmetic, personal care, and fragrance products, CosmoFactory is—from now through summer 2027—exploring
The Invisible Beauty.
The Invisible Beauty celebrates
60 years of Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna by telling the story of what makes beauty possible beyond its visible dimension. The project highlight the talents and dedication and persistence that each of us contributes to the making and marketing of cosmetics, personal care, and fragrance products. Every conversation on CosmoFactory—which you can hear on
Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you love to listen—is as much about business as it is about the human spirit that powers our industry.
New episodes go live on the first Tuesday of each month.
And if you’re only now discovering CosmoFactory, know that the first two years of the podcast comprise an extensive library of more than 100 thought-provoking conversations with experts from around the world, sharing next-level solutions and inspiration to turn your ideas into industry-changing innovations.
Category Management Helps Make Beauty Possible
For the first in this series of The Invisible Beauty conversations on CosmoFactory, we explore category management, which may itself be invisible unless you know where to look and what the real ROI of this approach to business can be.
Category management is a strategic approach for growing of an entire product category, e.g. hair care, or skincare, or color cosmetics. It’s about investing in the bigger picture and believing that when the category flourishes, so too does everyone involved—on both the business and consumer side.
Brands and retailers team up with category management experts to improve shelf efficiency, shopper loyalty, and category relevance, to prompt repeat visits, more and larger baskets, to build shopper momentum, spark cross-category effects, mitigate risk with data-driven decisions, and more.
CEO Romina Brown founded Strategic Solutions International in 2004; and the firm has, ever since, specialized in “growth audiences.” Early on SSI built a solid reputation in the hair care category, recognizing that multicultural beauty consumers have “traditionally been an audience that is underserved” and proactively filling in the knowledge gaps with data as well as category and consumer insights.
As Brown reminds me in our CosmoFactory podcast conversation, SSI was “the first company in the world to capture consumer syndicated data for the beauty supply channel.” She also shares her expert perspective on consumer research in our podcast conversation, explaining that “a large part” of what the team at SSI does “is storytelling,” using a realistic blend of advanced analytics and consumer insights to “give voice to their experience in a way that honors the consumer group, in a way that they’re not misunderstood,” and in a way that also improves SSI partner brand and retailers’ success in the market.
Today, SSI works with partners in a spectrum of categories across personal care and beauty.
A Personal Commitment to Prosperity
To me, there is something similar between what personal trainers do to help everyday people develop strength and otherwise stay healthy and fit throughout life and the work that category management professionals do for their clients. “We definitely do a lot of heavy lifting for our brand partners,” Brown told me after our podcast interview when I mentioned this analogy.
Brown herself is a very intentional person. Like many entrepreneurs and business leaders, she works long hours; yet she also takes care beyond her work to spend quality time with family, with friends, and at the gym. “When I get so busy, I find that it helps me to have some personal balance,” says Brown. “All work and no play; I know it’s an overheard cliché that people say ‘all work and no play’—really, it’s not good.”
“My family,” she says, “is the most important thing to me, making sure that all is well and that everyone is well mentally, physically healthy. I am very big on making sure that I am well and that my family is well. I also like to show up for my friends.”
In other words, she has all the makings of a prosperous life and of an exceptionally capable business partner, as evidenced by the SSI client list of brands both big and small: Unilever, Procter & Gamble, L’Oréal, Camille Rose Naturals, CANTU, Carol's Daughter, The Doux, Shea Moisture, Mielle, EBIN New York, ORS, House of Cheatham, and more. Together, Brown and the team at SSI are working behind the scenes to help beauty brands stay healthy and fit in an everchanging and increasingly tricky-to-navigate retail landscape. I learned so much about category management in my CosmoFactory podcast interview with Brown; and while I have heard her speak several times and had many conversations with her over the years, this was also a wonderful opportunity to get better acquainted with Romina Brown as a person and to better understand the unique skills and sincere passion she brings to her work.
